How MK Stalin's 'Pink Auto' scheme gift will empower Chennai women

This project was first announced in June 2024 as part of welfare schemes to support women in the city. Applications for the initiative were accepted in December, and beneficiaries were shortlisted in the following months.
The Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment will introduce ‘pink autos’ driven by women in Chennai. The initiative, set to launch on March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day, aims to create employment opportunities while ensuring safer travel for women, as per a DT next report.

A Tribute to Women on Women’s Day

Chief Minister MK Stalin will officially launch the scheme in Chennai. Speaking about the initiative, Geetha Jeevan, Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, said, “We have planned this initiative to enhance women's safety and empowerment and the employment of women. With Women's Day approaching, the CM will launch 'pink autos' as a tribute to them.”

This project was first announced in June 2024 as part of welfare schemes to support women in the city. Applications for the initiative were accepted in December, and beneficiaries were shortlisted in the following months.

Safety-Focused and Government-Supported

Under the scheme, 250 women will receive Rs 1 lakh as a government grant towards the purchase of CNG/hybrid auto rickshaws. These pink autos will be stationed at city railway stations and bus stands, making them easily accessible.

To ensure safety, the autos will be equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) and a women’s helpline number (181). They will also be monitored by city police for added security.

Priority has been given to widows and destitute women, offering them a path towards financial independence. With this initiative, Chennai is taking a strong step towards women’s empowerment and safer urban mobility.

International Women's Day

International Women's Day, observed on March 8, is a global celebration of women's achievements and a call for gender equality. It highlights the progress made in women's rights while addressing ongoing challenges such as workplace inequality, safety, and social empowerment. Governments, organisations, and communities use this day to launch initiatives that uplift women, such as skill development programmes, financial aid, and safety measures. In Chennai, the launch of 'pink autos' on this day symbolises a step towards women’s economic independence and security, reinforcing the spirit of empowerment and inclusion.>
