Suzuki to launch battery-powered SUV in partnership with Toyota by 2025

Suzuki and Toyota's collaborative efforts originating from their common roots in Enshu, western part of Shizuoka Prefecture, where both companies transitioned from looms to automobiles.
Suzuki Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation are enhancing their collaboration by introducing a new battery electric vehicle (BEV) SUV model developed by Suzuki for Toyota. Set to be manufactured at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India, starting in the spring of 2025, this model marks the first BEV in the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) relationship between the two companies. The model will be launched globally, supporting the expansion of electrified vehicles and their joint commitment to a carbon-neutral society.

The new BEV SUV is designed exclusively as an electric vehicle. It boasts agile driving characteristics, an ample cruising range, and a comfortable cabin. Additionally, the model is equipped with a 4WD system, enhancing its drivability on rough terrains and delivering a more powerful performance. The BEV unit and platform for this model were collaboratively developed by Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu Motor Corporation, leveraging each company’s unique strengths.

Past collaborations

Suzuki and Toyota's collaborative efforts date back to 2016, originating from their common roots in Enshu, the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture, where both companies transitioned from looms to automobiles. The partnership has since broadened to include vehicle production, mutual supply of vehicles, and initiatives to promote electrified vehicles. This collaboration has seen market introductions across Japan, India, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

"Suzuki will supply our first BEV to Toyota globally. I am grateful that the collaboration between the two companies has further deepened in this way. While continuing to be competitors, we will deepen our collaborations toward solving social issues, including the realisation of a carbon-neutral society through a multi-pathway approach," said Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki.

"By leveraging the BEV unit and platform that we jointly developed, we will take a new step in our collaboration in the field of electrified vehicles. This will allow us to deliver various choices that contribute to a carbon-neutral society to customers worldwide. We would like to learn from each other's strengths, compete, and further joint efforts based on a multi-pathway approach," added Toyota President Koji Sato.

Addressing multiple issues

This strategic move is part of Suzuki and Toyota's broader efforts to address social issues and environmental challenges. By capitalising on their collective expertise and resources, both companies aim to provide sustainable and innovative solutions in the automotive industry while maintaining healthy competition. The upcoming BEV SUV model reflects their shared vision for a future marked by efficient, eco-friendly transportation options and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions on a global scale.
