KPIT partners with Trentar to commercialise sodium-ion battery technology

Trentar’s investment in a 3GWh manufacturing facility demonstrates the anticipated market demand for this innovative technology.
KPIT Technologies and Trentar Energy Solutions have partnered to commercialise sodium-ion battery technology. KPIT, a global mobility solutions provider, will transfer its technology to Trentar, which will invest in manufacturing and pay KPIT upfront and royalty fees.

Both KPIT and Trentar are now part of a select group of companies globally that are focused on developing and advancing sodium-ion battery technology.

This collaboration aims to make electric mobility more affordable and sustainable by leveraging earth-abundant materials for sodium-ion batteries. These batteries offer advantages like longer lifespan, faster charging, and diverse applications across various sectors.

The agreement involves Trentar investing in a 3GWh sodium-ion battery manufacturing capacity. KPIT will receive upfront technology transfer fees and royalties over eight years.

Perks of utilising sodium-ion batteries

A key advantage of this technology is its reliance on readily available raw materials, which contributes to lower production costs and increased affordability of electric vehicles.

The potential applications of sodium-ion batteries are wide-ranging. as they can power two-, three-, and four-wheeled vehicles, as well as public transportation. Stationary applications include UPS backups and grid storage. Furthermore, these batteries hold promise for the marine and defense sectors.

Focus on future demand

Trentar’s investment in a 3GWh manufacturing facility demonstrates the anticipated market demand for this innovative technology.

“Building sustainable mobility technologies is at the heart of KPITs vision. Sodium-ion battery technology was born from the team's passion, perseverance, and synergetic collaboration with leading research institutes. KPIT will continue to work on several other sustainable technology solutions”, said Ravi Pandit, Chairman, KPIT Technologies.

On the new tie-up, Subodh Menon, Founder & Vice-Chairman, Trentar, said: “With its cost-effectiveness, simplified supply chain, and enhanced safety, sodium-ion technology represents a strategic focus for our organisation. We are committed to developing a robust technological product line in this space, catering to diverse customers across mobility and energy storage verticals."
