JSW MG Motor India is leading the charge in electric vehicle (EV) innovation, recently announcing a groundbreaking development in repurposing used EV batteries.

In partnership with Vision Mechatronics, the company has launched India’s first high-voltage (HV) second-life battery featuring a locally designed Battery Management System (BMS).

This exciting project, named ‘Project Revive,’ was showcased at The Battery Show from October 3-5, 2024, at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida.

This marks JSW MG Motor India’s third pilot project focusing on second-life battery applications. The initiative highlights the company’s commitment to promoting a circular economy and building a sustainable EV ecosystem.

The first deployment of this innovative product will serve as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup for an industrial facility in Pune, showcasing the effectiveness of second-life EV batteries for large-scale energy storage.

Vision Mechatronics, a prominent Indian tech firm specializing in second-life batteries, has been pivotal in the development of this project. The new product comes with an indigenous BMS designed for various stationary applications, ensuring both flexibility and efficiency.

Equipped with advanced monitoring systems, it promises optimal battery performance and early detection of potential issues. Safety is a top priority, with measures in place to prevent hazards like thermal runaway.

Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “Our partnership with Vision Mechatronics is a testament of bringing circularity in the EV batteries, by providing it a second life for large-scale industrial application. The launch of this project, India’s first high-voltage second-life battery with an indigenous BMS, is indeed an innovation and makes us future ready.”

Dr. Rashi Gupta, Managing Director of Vision Mechatronics, also shared her enthusiasm: “By repurposing EV batteries, ReLive contributes to a circular economy and offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional energy storage options.”

JSW MG Motor India has previously launched several EV battery recycling initiatives under ‘Project Revive,’ reinforcing its dedication to sustainability. Earlier this year, the company teamed up with BATX and IIT Delhi to create a 100 person off-grid charging station and partnered with Lohum and TERI to deploy a 5kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to power a school in Nainital.

These efforts demonstrate the company’s commitment to innovating sustainable mobility solutions and contributing to India’s energy transformation.
